Should this OL prospect be on Chicago Bears radar?
Does Marquis Hayes fit Chicago Bears?
One of the best things about Marquis Hayes is his experience and versatility. He has worked as a run blocker in both zone and power schemes and is proficient and both areas. As a three-year starter, he should be able to walk in and compete to start in 2022, and at a third-round cost, he could be a nice addition to the Chicago Bears.
The question comes to down to his position. Arguably the only starter the Chicago Bears have locked in right now is Cody Whitahri at left guard. Whitehair can move around, but do you want to keep doing this to him after he settled in somewhere last season? On top of that, he is still a cut candidate, and the team could re-sign James Daniels, then draft Hayes to play left guard.
Hayes also has not shown that he cannot play right guard, just that he is more custom to the left side. The left or right debate should not be enough to sway the team from taking a potential starter if that is what they see in him.
The ceiling is not very high, and the floor could be low if he does not improve as a pass blocker. Still, being able to find someone who will compete to start, who certainly can run block, and who has the potential to grow as a pass blocker makes him worth his cost if that came in round three or later.
