The Chicago Bears can still make a splash by signing one of these free agents

The Chicago Bears could still sign wide receiver, Jarvis Landry

When doing my wide receiver rankings, Jarvis Landry was not an option in free agency. He was rumored to be on the trade block but was not worth sending draft capital to the Browns knowing he would more than likely be released. Had he been available, he’d have been in my second tier of wide receiver options (WR5 range).

Landry is only two years removed from being selected to the Pro Bowl for five years in a row. 2020 and 2021 were not great and at nearly 30 years old, one must wonder if he’s starting to see a decline in his game. That wouldn’t matter to me too much though as the Chicago Bears cannot only add receivers through the draft. Darnell Mooney is headed into year three of his career, but if the rest of the group are rookies and sophomores that’s not good for Justin Fields’ development.

What I like about the Jarvis Landry option is that he would not count against the compensatory pick formula for 2023. Right now, the Bears are not qualified to earn a 2023 compensatory pick, but players like Allen Robinson, Andy Dalton and Akiem Hicks are still free agents who might give the team enough to gain an extra 2023 pick. Personally, I have always struggled to see this happening but signing guys like Landry who do not negatively affect the formula is one way to make it happen.
