The Chicago Bears’ offseason has not quite gone according to plan. The team was not anticipating spending big money in free agency, but one name they did go out and spend on was Larry Ogunjobi. Unfortunately, a foot injury for Ogunjobi nixed the deal, and the Bears’ big splash turned into Justin Jones as a depth replacement.

So, while the team is expected to use the draft to start to build up the offense, there is a question of how much they see this role as a need. Considering the team went out and spent big here, they clearly view this as a key to the defense.

It makes sense considering Matt Eberflus spent a lot of time with his mentor Rod Marinelli, and also the scheme works firsthand with DeForest Buckner in Indianapolis.

If Eberflus and Ryan Poles are adamant enough that they would spend big, would they also be drafting the position high to make sure that they got their fit?

It is certainly possible. Ryan Poles talked about how the draft is a time to draft premium positions, and there are only so many times you can take young 300-pound men who can move like some of these higher prospects do.

In the second round names such as Logan Hall, DeMarvin Leal, and Perrion Winfrey could be relevant.

In round three you could see a name such as Matthew Butler from Tennessee. Even on day three, the Chicago Bears were connected to Eric Johnson, from Missouri State. Johnson is a local product from Illinois, but the interest in Johnson, combined with Hall and others shows that 3-technique is still a need on their board.

They have options and have been connected to players from round two through round six at that position. The team may not do it early, but they appear to be set to drat a Larry Ogunjobi replacement this weekend.
