Depth behind Darnell Mooney must be watched at Chicago Bears training camp

Besides Darnell Mooney, the Chicago Bears have a lack of proven talent at the wide receiver position. With that said, they will have to make do with what they have for the upcoming year. The depth outside of Mooney includes:

  • Byron Pringle
  • N’Keal Harry
  • Dante Pettis
  • Velus Jones Jr.
  • Equanimeous St. Brown
  • David Moore
  • Tajae Sharpe
  • Dazz Newsome
  • Isaiah Coulter
  • Nsimba Webster
  • Chris Finke
  • Kevin Shaa

Byron Pringle seems to be headed for the WR2 spot, but Bears training camp could present some breakout candidates. Veterans like David Moore, Tajae Sharpe, and Dante Pettis could end up taking some WR2 reps as well — especially if any of them develop good chemistry with Justin Fields. With so much focus on Fields and how he progresses through camp, the Chicago Bears will undoubtedly take note of any connections that stand out.

A dark horse for the second wideout spot could be Velus Jones, Jr., who the team seems really high on already. His size and speed are already a plus for him, and the fact that he is 25 already means the team will not look to bring him along slowly. The rebuild means that young talent should be given plenty of opportunities, so expect to see a lot of Velus Jones early in the year.

Bears training camp gives the receivers plenty of time to show what they can do. While some of the names on the Bears’ roster are not super flashy, the Bears do have solid depth at the position. Hopefully, some of them can find a good connection with Fields at camp because Darnell Mooney is going to be getting a lot of attention from the opposing defenses. This should be a fierce position battle at camp this year with so much room open on the depth chart.
