Mitch Trubisky throws subtle shade at former Chicago Bears coach

Mitch Trubisky is no longer the Chicago Bears’ problem (or solution), but we cannot just ignore what the former first-round draft pick had to say about his former team. Ryan Pace and the Chicago Bears drafted Trubisky by trading up from the third pick in the draft to the second. That alone put some crazy pressure on the former Bears quarterback, but was it the pressure Trubisky put on himself that was the problem, or was it the former head coach, Matt Nagy who is to blame?

Honestly, the truth always lies somewhere in the middle. In this case, Mitch Trubisky is what I would call an average quarterback in the NFL. He’s a guy you can win with, but not necessarily win because of. He will make some great plays but also some horrible mistakes. Leaving the Chicago Bears to learn from another coaching staff in Buffalo seems to be a great move for Trubisky. He is not the front-runner to be the starting quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Mitch Trubisky clearly was not happy with his role for the Chicago Bears

Mike Tomlin is not an offensive-minded coach, but he runs that team in a way that Matt Nagy will never come close to touching at any coaching level of the game. This will be Mitch Trubisky’s time to prove that he’s better than many believe based on his career here in Chicago.

In a recent interview with Albert Breer, Mitch Trubisky had these things to say about his time in Chicago:

"“We won a lot of games. I’ve made a lot of big plays, I contributed to those winning teams and I knew I was a leader in those locker rooms. People can say whatever they want about it. I’m proud of my work there.”"

Mitch Trubisky then threw some subtle shade at his former head coach, Matt Nagy:

"“I would say I process quicker now. I know where I want to go with the ball. I’m able to just trust my abilities and play a lot more free, not just go where the coach wants me to go with the football. I think it was a lot along the lines of just having a trust and being on the same page as the offensive coordinator. I felt like being in Buffalo, the quarterback had a lot more free rein to go where he wanted with the reads and go where he wanted with the ball, as opposed to Chicago. Even if you got a completion [in Chicago], I felt like sometimes it wasn’t necessarily what the coach wanted. They put you in a box a little bit more than you wanted to be, and I think that restricts you as a player. It’s just different experiences. In the end, we still won games. It’s just different team to team.”"

This was obviously meant for Matt Nagy even though he mentions the offensive coordinator. As we now know after Mitch Trubisky, Nick Foles, Andy Dalton and Justin Fields playing in Nagy’s system, it is not about who is at quarterback. Instead, it is about Matt Nagy wanting to fit everyone into a system that clearly doesn’t work well. This is why Matt Nagy is no longer a head coach in the NFL and is back with Andy Reid in Kansas City.

Personally, I love hearing these things from Mitch Trubisky. Sometimes, he was too much of a team player and a “boy scout”. I’d prefer him to speak his mind and call out the coaching staff if he truly felt that way. We saw Nick Foles do it. Now, Trubisky has the opportunity and is in a better situation in Pittsburgh to show us if he is better than the system in Chicago or if he truly is just an average quarterback who will end up as a career backup come 2023.

Feel free to comment: “Stop talking about Mitch Trubisky, he’s no longer here”
