Biggest “Names” the Chicago Bears Cut: James O’Shaughnessy, TE

When I saw James O’Shaughnessy on the cut list today, I was a little surprised. Jake Tonges is a hybrid fullback/tight end and I didn’t expect him to be kept on the roster over O’Shaugnessy who is a true tight end. Well, the pattern continues and Ryan Poles and Matt Eberflus have chosen youth over experience.

Tonges gives the team some versatility at the fullback position should starting fullback Khari Blasingame go down with an injury. O’Shaughnessy struggled to stay on the field this offseason but showed up at times when he did. He is a name that I think many fans of the NFL are familiar with (in a similar way to the rest of these players listed) due to some past success in his career. Again, age is what played a factor here in my opinion. The team went with a younger Tonges vs. a 31-year-old veteran on the downside of his career.

None of these guys are truly big names. This is why the word names, is in quotes. I don’t think anyone should be upset about the fact that any of these four are gone. In fact, it is the opposite. Chicago Bears fans should be excited that youth has prevailed. This is better for the future of this organization. It might not pay off with every player. It might not pay off this year. These rookies and younger guys getting snaps will pay off in the end though.
