Chicago Bears Week 2 Overreaction No. 3: Justin Fields isn’t the guy, time to move on

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: Ohio State quarterbacks can’t be good in the NFL.

That tired narrative flooded Twitter when the Chicago Bears drafted Justin Fields, and it didn’t result in Fields immediately throwing for 500 yards and 6 TDs in his first start.

However, after another loss to the Packers in prime time has Bears fans clamoring for a new quarterback– or at least for the current quarterback to step up.

Now, one piece of criticism that reigns true is that the Bears need to put more trust in the hands of Justin Fields. If he’s the leader of this offense that he was drafted to be, he can’t only throw the ball 11 times in a divisional matchup.

That said, this season wasn’t for fireworks; it was for progression. And that’s what the Bears are doing, top-to-bottom.

This is a very raw coaching staff that is now in control of a young core of players.

So, does Justin Fields need to be better? Of course, but it was his second game with a brand new head coach and a brand-new offensive coordinator.

This process is going to take time; there isn’t going to be a genie the Bears can get three wishes granted from.

Would that be more fun? Duh, but reality doesn’t work that way.

Justin Fields has to get better, the coaching staff needs to get better, everyone needs to get better.

But that’s exactly what this season is for.

Next season, if the Bears are still giving Justin Fields 11 pass plays, okay, maybe it’s time to re-evaluate.
