The Bears need to rely on David Montgomery now more than ever
For David Montgomery, this is his opportunity to shine while Herbert is on IR. His contract is up after this season and Montgomery needs to produce to convince the Bears or other teams to offer him a second contract.
Because Herbert and Fields put up bigger numbers rushing the ball, Montgomery has become somewhat of an afterthought. Despite Herbert having a great season, he is not a good blocker, and his pass-catching skills remain his weakness. Both skills are something Montgomery is good at and perhaps why he was not traded at the trade deadline despite the rumors. It seems like a wise decision now.
He should have no problem getting at least 25 carries while helping with the pass protection. He also could be used in the screen games, which could add another dimension to the passing game.
Rookie Tristen Ebner, the sixth-round pick from Baylor, who has not seen much action so far, will see increased activity as a backup. Expect him to get seven to eight carries and could be used as a kick returner.
