The biggest thing we learned from the Chicago Bears loss to the Jets
When we look at the Chicago Bears roster, we all know that it is depleted of talent. The team is throwing out guys who don’t deserve to even see the field most weeks. I feel like I’m kicking a dead horse when I write this same narrative over and over and over again. Justin Fields has struggled to help this team win games, but today showed fans that he has been the entire offense over the last seven weeks.
Since Week 5 of the 2022 NFL season, Justin Fields has been one of the most productive quarterbacks in the league. He has not done things in a traditional sense and that seems to frustrate some Chicago Bears fans. They seem to think that if a quarterback doesn’t throw for 250 to 300 yards each game, then he’s not a good quarterback. The whole “he’s a running back” narrative needs to end, but it will never go away completely.
In the first quarter, Trevor Siemian and the Chicago Bears offense came out of the gates firing on all cylinders. Siemian hit David Montgomery and Darrynton Evans on a few checkdowns that went for decent yardage. He also hit Chase Claypool on a deep, 30-yard pass near the sideline. The Bears scored three points in the first quarter and quickly added another seven to start the second quarter. That was the end of their scoring.
The Chicago Bears offense could not put up points without Justin Fields
The big takeaway though is that the team couldn’t put up points vs this Jets’ defense. Now, to be fair, the Jets defense is one of the top-ranked defenses in the NFL. Even Justin Fields would have had a difficult test vs this team. However, the Chicago Bears were averaging nearly 30 points per game over the last few weeks and haven’t scored less than 24 points since Week 6 vs the Commanders. That is until today when they only came away with 10 and lost by 21 points to the Jets.
Justin Fields may not be throwing the ball for 200 to 300 yards per game like some of the top traditional pocket passers in the league, but he is hitting that number in total yards. As I already alluded to, Fields has been dominant since Week 5. He has averaged 265 total yards per game. He has thrown 11 passing touchdowns and ran in another six for a total of 17. During that span, he has thrown only four interceptions. His completion percentage is near 64% and his QB rating is nearly 100. Anyone trying to say Siemian would be better for this offense is delusional.
