The Chicago Bears put in a valiant effort against an equally shorthanded Green Bay Packers team on Sunday. The Bears’ defense led the first three quarters 19-10 and had a legitimate shot at winning the ballgame. This despite missing three starters in the secondary — CB Kyler Gordon, SS Jaquan Brisker, and FS Eddie Jackson.

Unfortunately, the Chicago Bears effort came up short once again vs the Packers

Eventually, Aaron Rodgers found a way to beat the undermanned Bears 28-19. The Chicago Bears gave up 18 points in the fourth quarter alone. The defense ran out of gas due to a lack of a pass rush that didn’t register any quarterback sacks or even QB hits. Not to mention, questionable, conservative play calling by offensive coordinator Luke Getsy in the second half. Getsy has had a rough couple of weeks after NFL.com named him one of the top future head coaching candidates.

While the Chicago Bears lost the game, they still manage to hold on to a top-three draft pick. But winning the game against the hated Packers would not have been that much of a detriment to their draft position and even the ardent pro-tank fans should not have been upset had they won.

The Bears now enter the bye at an awkward time. They have only four more games left after the bye in December. Three of their next four opponents are Super Bowl contenders fighting for the top seed in their conference (Buffalo in the AFC and both Minnesota and Philadelphia in the NFC). They can lose all of them and end with a 10-game losing streak.

At this point, they are just trying to get to the finish line without further serious injuries. At least they manage to accomplish that with Justin Fields still standing Sunday.

Here are my seven thoughts following another agonizing 28-19 loss to the Packers:
