Chicago Bears Thought No. 1: Justin Fields returns with a bang

After missing last week’s game against the New York Jets, quarterback Justin Fields made an anticipated return to the lineup against the division-rival Green Bay Packers. It was interesting to see how he was going to hold up.

He electrified the fans with a 56-yard touchdown with about three minutes left in the first quarter. He took a shotgun snap, ran to the right, and cuts up the field, avoiding nickel cornerback Keisean Nixon. Once he hits up the field, he hit the hole and leaves four Packers defenders chasing him in the dust. It was his third rushing touchdown of 50 yards or more.

He also completed 20 of 25 passes for 254 yards. At one point, he even completed 11 straight pass attempts. Several things stood out in his return Sunday. He threw a great deep ball to Equanimeous St. Brown for 56 yards when he placed a perfectly placed ball in his hands. Then in the fourth quarter, he threw another deep ball to N’Keal Harry, who went up in the air for a 49-yard grab.

However, his impressive throw was the pass completion to TE Cole Kmet in the third quarter. He waited patiently in the pocket, allowing Kmet to clear. Once he stepped up in the pocket, he did not take off and ran like he usually does. Instead, he connected with Kmet for 24 yards keeping the drive alive.

He said in his postgame press conference it was his best passing game of the season. The numbers certainly back that up. The critics will no doubt nitpick the two interceptions he threw in the fourth quarter, and he continues to struggle to find ways to win these close ballgames.

However, he managed to play the whole game without aggravating or suffering an injury and progressed as a passer Sunday. Realistically, that is all we can hope for as Bears fans at this point.
