Chicago Bears Thought No. 2: Matt Eberflus’ timeout before halftime
Matt Eberflus made a curious decision to call a timeout with 23 seconds left before halftime. The Bears led 16-3 and the Packers were facing fourth and four. He defended the call, saying he wanted to make the Packers decide and allow the defense to get set up.
The problem was the Packers had already gone on fourth down on their previous drive after they recovered a Chase Claypool fumble. While the Bears’ defense held them the first time, they did not respect the defense given the lack of pass rush. Honestly, why should they? They were already down by two touchdowns and kicking a field goal would not have made any sense.
Sure enough, the Packers scored when Rodgers had all day to throw thanks to an anemic pass rush that allowed rookie receiver Christian Watson to separate himself from rookie safety Elijah Hicks for the touchdown. That timeout allowed Packers head coach Matt LaFleur to regroup.
That, along with Cairo Santos missing another extra point after the Bears scored a touchdown on their previous drive. You could tell the momentum was starting to change.
