Chicago Bears Thought No. 3: Luke Getsy failed the Bears
It was not the finest day for offensive coordinator Luke Getsy either. He called a good game in the first half, but he made baffling decisions in the second half.
The Chicago Bears had to settle for a field goal after completing a 24-yard pass to Cole Kmet. The field goal put them up 19-10, but on this sequence of downs, the Bears ran several wildcat runs with David Montgomery and Darrynton Evans that went nowhere. Given that Justin Fields had run 71 yards on 4 carries on their two possessions, Getsy could not have come up with another run play in the second half?
Then after a big completion to N’Keal Harry to start the fourth quarter, the Bears inexplicably ran the ball three straight times from the Green Bay 28-yard line. One of which Justin Fields criticized David Montgomery for not running hard.
The 40-yard field goal attempt by Cairo Santos, who had already missed an extra point earlier, was blocked. The Packers proceeded to take the lead on the following drive, which they never relinquished.
It is ironic that a former Packers assistant like Getsy did not understand how Aaron Rodgers always finds a way to beat the Bears. His conservative play-calling in the second half certainly contributed to the loss.
Since this week is a bye, coaches will not be made available to the media this week. But you can bet that when he returns next Thursday, the media will be ready to grill him about the Packers game.
With only four games remaining this season, he needs to figure out the personnel he currently has and how he plans to utilize them after the bye week.
