Did Ryan Poles protect Justin Fields and the Chicago Bears’ future?

One has to assume, based on the comments made by Matt Eberflus after the Lions game compared to his comments on Monday, that Ryan Poles stepped in and said enough is enough. Matt Eberflus stated in his press conference today that Justin Fields had an MRI on his hip and it shows a strain. He will sit vs the Vikings and Nathan Peterman will get the start.

He can’t play through that, but he can play with a separated shoulder? Seems suspect. However, it is the right decision to be made and the only justifiable way to sit Justin Fields without it looking like truly tanking. Again, the hope is that Minnesota wins — probably would have even with Justin Fields starting, but now it’s a lock — and the Texans beat the Colts. At the very least, Chicago maintains the second-overall pick. At best, they take the top spot in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Whoever made the decision regarding Justin Fields, it was the right decision. The Bears have nothing to play for in this game and Justin Fields has shown enough to know what to expect from him in 2023. One more game with a broken offensive line, a broken defensive front, and a subpar wide receiver group isn’t going to show this coaching staff or front office anything different. Congratulations Matt Eberflus and Ryan Poles for not screwing this one up.
