Chicago Bears Thought No. 4: Is Khalil Herbert ready to be a starter?

After yesterday’s game, RB David Montgomery may have played his final game with the Chicago Bears as he’s set to become a free agent.

That leaves the team with Khalil Herbert as the lone returning running back with starting experience. Because the current offensive scheme fits him better than Montgomery, there is a strong chance the Bears will likely let Montgomery walk.

However, Herbert is not a complete player. Montgomery is a better blocker and receiver than Herbert at this point.

You might also remember the Miami Dolphins game in which he whiffed on a block during the punt that was blocked for a touchdown that was the difference in them losing. He is also not a good receiver out of the backfield, and he dropped a pass thrown to him yesterday.

Because of those issues, I still have hesitation and doubts about Herbert being the starting running back in 2023. He is young enough that he can still improve in those areas. But I would not rule out drafting another RB in the later rounds, just like Herbert was to provide depth and push Herbert.
