The Chicago Bears hired Ben Johnson from the Detroit Lions.
As Bears fans know from the numerous hires in recent years, a new coach typically will bring in some former players that he once worked with. He is comfortable with them, and they are familiar with him as well. This also helps the transition of culture.
Who are some former Lions who worked with Johnson and could fit with the Bears?
3. Dan Skipper would be great for the Chicago Bears
Dan Skipper is a bit of a cult legend in Detroit now. He has been with the team since 2019, but has just 11 career starts, all of them coming in the last three years with Johnson. As well as starting for the injured Taylor Decker he has been a sixth offensive lineman in the Johnson scheme as well.
The Bears would love reliable tackle depth and the sixth lineman being familiar with that role in Johnson's offense is just a plus.
2. The Chicago Bears could sign Kevin Zeitler
Kevin Zeitler will be 35 years old this upcoming season so he may be mulling retirement. He may also be looking to sign wherever he is wanted. The Bears have a big hole at right guard and the Lions seemed to like what he provided in his one year with the team. Why not have him follow Johnson?
1. Will Tim Patrick fit with the Chicago Bears?
The Detroit Lions leaned on Patrick a good bit as the receiver who battled injury and did not see the field since 2021 put up 416 yards with Johnson last season. Johnson bet on him and put him in a role that worked for him when many wrote him off. His blocking could also be a great benefit to the Bears receiver room. This would be an ideal Keenan Allen replacement.
