LAKE FOREST – Kyler Gordon is entering the final year of his rookie contract and would gladly take an extension from the Chicago Bears if that’s how everything plays out.

“I mean I love Chicago,” Gordon said at the 2024 Ed Block Courage Award banquet. “I love everything about it — the people, the history, the team, the community, so if this is where God tells me to be, this is where I will be, this is where I want to be. As far as extension, we’ll see what happens. I’ve got no control on that. But God willing. …”

Gordon played 15 games and finished with 75 total tackles (career high), five passes defended,  three fumble recoveries, a forced fumble and 0.5 sacks. According to Pro Football Focus, Gordon’s 34 receptions given up were the 12th fewest from a slot corner with at least 150 coverage snaps.

The former second-round draft pick out of Washington also set career highs in total defensive snaps played (724), snaps in the box (196) and total pressures (9).

Gordon is an ascending football player and plays an important position in today’s NFL, so talks of a contract extension would make sense for the 25-year-old nickel corner.

When it comes to the potential timing of an extension, Gordon mentioned he was not “pressed for time, whether it’s here now or later,” but he does want things done “right and being fair about it.”

Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen highlighted Gordon in his introductory press conference back in January when asked about the secondary, and the young nickel corner has already had conversations with his new defensive play caller.

“I like the way he’s talking already,” Gordon said. “So we’ve had a lot of good talk. I’ve watched his previous defenses and stuff like that, so I already kind of trying to figure out where and how I would look in a defense like that. I think there’s going to be a lot of special things that me and him could do together and as a whole entire defense, so just excited to see how he puts everything together, so …”

That pairing between Allen and Gordon could be one that fans get to watch for several seasons, but Poles and Gordon’s agent first needs to get an extension done, and Gordon wouldn’t mind if that was sooner rather than later.

“I want to say indifferent about it,” Gordon said. “Like I’d be extremely happy if it happened now. If it didn’t happen, I’ve still got to go to work regardless. So whatever it may be, my attitude’s going to be positive regardless.”
