Bears facing nightmare scenario at polarizing position after Ben Johnson update

Oh no....

Poor Ben Johnson. His Chicago Bears team has just been plagued with injury after injury.

They have lost multiple defensive starters throughout the first four games of the regular season, including Jaylon Johnson, Kyler Gordon, T.J. Edwards, and Grady Jarrett. Even on offense, they have had to play games with rookie first-round pick Colston Loveland and starting right tackle Darnell Wright.

The only position they have prayed they wouldn't have to deal with when it comes to injury is at kicker. Unfortunately for Johnson, he faced that scenario when Cairo Santos dealt with a quad injury.

Santos was at practice on Wednesday, working with a specialist, but Johnson didn't provide the most encouraging update, as the team is managing his injury day by day.

“We’ll see as we go through the week how he’s feeling and how he’s looking," Johnson said via CHGO.

The Bears' backup plan if Santos is out is scary

Last month, after Santos' rough first game against the Minnesota Vikings, the Bears decided to give him some competition by signing Jake Moody to the practice squad. Moody also had a bad first game, missing two field goals, with one being blocked, before he was cut from the San Francisco 49ers.

Santos faces some criticism after the Vikings game with a bad kickoff late in the game that gave Minnesota good field position. He also missed a critical 50-yard field goal to start the fourth quarter. The Bears ended up losing by three points.

Since that Minnesota game, Santos has been perfect. He hasn't missed a field goal or an extra point, earning back his job without Moody hovering over his shoulder.

Now the Bears might have to lean on Moody on Monday against the Washington Commanders if Santos can't go. Not exactly a dream scenario in one of the most important games of the season for the Bears.
