If the Chicago Bears thought the fan base thought things couldn't possibly get worse at training camp, they would be wrong for the 10 millionth time, because they just did.

Before their practice on Tuesday, Bears head coach Ben Johnson confirmed that safety Coby Bryant had surgery on his knee and will be out four to six months. The hope is that he could be back before the end of the regular season.

Bryant got hurt in practice last week and was carted off the field. It was originally thought he would miss only the first month of the season. He signed a three-year, $40 million contract with the Bears in the offseason.

Bears don't expect Coby Bryant back until potentially late in the season

That certainly took a turn for the worse. Bears fans were hoping to see Bryant on the field by October, but now he might be lucky to get on the field at all in 2026.

Xavier Woods was signed in free agency last week to replace Bryant in the starting lineup. The good news is that Woods is off to a great start, nabbing an interception in his second practice of training camp.

Chicago can still lean on Dillon Thieneman as the other starter at safety. Thieneman might be a rookie, but he has performed well over his college career. His playmaking abilities and versatility make him a legit weapon in this defense.

It's a shame that Bryant won't be able to play for a long time because he was showing the kind of leadership traits the Bears needed. He was also the kind of safety they needed back there in pass coverage. His ability to track the ball and recognize the play made him such a good safety.

Maybe somehow things will be better for the Bears in training camp, like no more injuries to key players after losing Bryant, Luther Burden, Montez Sweat, Braxton Jones, Kyler Gordon, and more. If any more injuries occur for the Bears, they could be in danger.
