Since the injury to Lamar Jackson in Week 8, we have already seen much being made about the connection between current Chicago Bears backup quarterback Tyson Bagent and former offensive coordinator Declan Doyle, who now holds the same role in Baltimore.
With Jackson on injured reserve and Tyler Huntley also banged up with a turf toe injury, it makes a ton of sense for the Ravens to inquire about Bagent's availability. The connection between Doyle and Bagent is worth noting.
And, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport agrees, as the first name he recently brought up on the air, when speaking of Baltimore's quarterback needs, was indeed Bagent. However, Rapoport also went on to mention one other key name.
"Jacoby Brissett, essentially benched in Arizona ... could he be a name that's available?"
Just this past week, Brissett was benched in favor of Gardner Minshew, who would go on to lead the Arizona Cardinals to a comeback victory over the Dallas Cowboys.
Jacoby Brissett makes more sense for the Ravens than Tyson Bagent does
Despite the connection and familiarity between Bagent and Doyle, if we're looking at this objectively, it's easy to see that Brissett could be the better option, overall.
Brissett has extensive starting experience, and that counts. What he's done in Arizona may or may not matter at this point, because the Cardinals have been a train wreck for a few years.
However, the Ravens are a different animal altogether. Doyle has done a great job, this year, calling plays and implementing a new scheme.
Brissett may be better-equipped to handle the pressure placed on his shoulders in a situation like this, too. We saw what happened when the Bears put everything on Bagent's shoulders in his start against the Green Bay Packers. He completely folded. He looked far from the guy many Bears fans thought he was, all along.
If I'm a Ravens fan, given the choice between the two, I am taking Brissett 10 times out of 10. It isn't particularly close.
Now, the question becomes, what is the asking price for both quarterbacks, if they do become available before this year's NFL trade deadline?
Examining the potential asking prices of Jacoby Brissett and Tyson Bagent
First of all, let's look at the contracts.
Brissett is on a one-year deal, so after this season, he's a free agent. This is purely a one-year rental.
Bagent, meanwhile, is on a two-year deal that runs through the 2027 season. He's much younger at 26 years old and could become an integral part of the Ravens' future, depending on what happens with Jackson.
Remember, the Ravens have not extended Jackson and his current contract runs through 2027 as well. Is Baltimore entertaining the idea of looking at life after Lamar Jackson? They very well could be.
So, Bagent might be a more intriguing option for them, all things considered. It all depends on whether they want to take a stab at a possible future play or if they're solely focused on the here-and-now.
Putting all speculation aside, one would think Bagent goes for somewhere around a fourth-round pick. Maybe, it's a conditional pick that becomes a third if Bagent ends up leading Baltimore to the postseason or something along those lines.
For Brissett, there's no possible way he goes for more than a fifth rounder, and that might be generous. He is soon to be 34 years old, was just benched and his contract is up after this season.
So, who do the Ravens choose to pursue more: Bagent or Brissett?
It's likely they go after one, if not both, rather than relying on Joe Fagnano, the team's undrafted free agent and third-string quarterback.
