Bears must send a sobering message just as the Saints did with Dennis Allen's firing
By Ryan Heckman
Monday morning, Chicago Bears fans witnessed multiple organizations make a necessary move that caused some jealousy within the Windy City. First, the Las Vegas Raiders had announced the firing of offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, which caused various reactions. But that wasn't the big move.
The New Orleans Saints fired head coach Dennis Allen after losing seven-straight games, in a move that came far too late for some fans. But, alas, it has been done. This has some Bears fans wondering, why can't Chicago do the same thing with head coach Matt Eberflus?
Eberflus has been in over his head for quite some time now, and despite the Bears' late season surge in 2023, the big problems have yet to change.
We don't need to go into all of the nitty gritty details. By now, fans know the gist of it. Eberflus is now 0-18 in road games on Sundays after the Week 9 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. That, in and of itself, should be a fireable offense. But, it goes beyond just that number.
The Bears have come ill-prepared for far too many games since Eberflus has taken over. The lack of discipline and effort is blatantly apparent at this point, and this organization needs a wake-up call.
The Bears need to take a page out of the Saints' book and fire Matt Eberflus
Both the Saints and Bears have shown plenty of incompetence in recent years, and some areas have differed of course. But, New Orleans finally proved they had the stones to make a big move by firing Allen.
More Bears news:
While the Saints' problems have been with Allen as well as financial decisions, the Bears' problems have been solely on the coaching staff. After putting together a formidable roster (maybe outside of the offensive line) this team should have been a lot better, even in Williams' rookie year.
Instead, the Bears have taken a ton of talent on the offensive side of the ball and done arguably nothing with it. Let's be real, here, for a moment. This team boasts D.J. Moore, Keenan Allen, Cole Kmet, D'Andre Swift and couldn't get into the end zone once against a bottom-third defense in Arizona.
What are the Bears waiting for, at this point? History is quite literally repeating itself. By now, many fans have pointed out the fact that Chicago has now drafted a quarterback while keeping the head coach, only to fire said head coach after that rookie quarterback's first year in the league -- twice.
Now, with Eberflus' inevitable firing, the pattern will have repeated itself three times. When will Chicago learn? When will George McCaskey figure this out? The incompetence is at an all-time high over these past few years.
The Bears have no business being such underachievers this many years in a row. It's gotten out of hand, and Poles has to take matters into his own hands and make a rash decision. Firing a head coach midseason has never been something the Bears do, but Poles has to make it happen.
A message needs to be sent; a message that says the same, old shtick isn't working and heads must roll.
