Bears' once-prized $48 million signing now faces crossroads game against Saints

Can he step up in a big way?

When the Chicago Bears spent $48 million on a three-year deal for free agent defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo, many fans questioned the move.

Odeyingbo only had 16.5 sacks in his first four years in the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts. While sacks are a key stat, he was still great at pressuring and hitting the quarterback, as he racked up 46 quarterback hits in that same span, including 17 in each of the last two years.

Most people thought, if anything, Odeyingbo was at least going to help Montez Sweat get more sacks and create more opportunities for him since defenses would have to respect Odeyingbo's game. Turns out, that hasn't been the case at all.

Not even close.

Odeyingbo's awful Bears debut season leaves him needing a big game against the Saints

Through five games, Odeyingbo has only racked up 11 tackles, three quarterback hits, one tackle for loss, one sack, and one pass deflection. Cue the Office Space scene where one of the Bobs asks, "What would you say, you do here?"

According to PFF, Odeyingbo has an overall grade of 52.5, ranking 143rd out of 174 defensive ends that qualify. His eight total pressures rank 80th among defensive ends in the NFL.

While the previous Office Space reference might go over young Bears fans' heads, there is a legitimate question that needs to be asked about Odeyingbo's performance in 2025. He is not getting to the quarterback nearly as often as he did with the Colts, and Sweat only has one sack himself, but at least he is still providing pressure on the quarterback.

Going up against one of the worst teams in the NFL should be a momentum booster for Odeyingbo as he can start increasing those stats in a hurry. He'll need to because nobody is happy about his play and the money they are spending on him.

If there is another quiet game for the fifth-year veteran, there might be some legitimate questions about activating Austin Booker from IR as soon as possible so he can start.
