The Chicago Bears came out aggressive and swinging on both sides of the ball early in their Monday Night Football matchup with the Minnesota Vikings and put up a quick 7-0 lead on their NFC North foe.
Following the Vikings' first two drives that ended with sacks on third down and punts on fourth, O'Connell was interviewed on the sideline during ESPN's live broadcast. When asked about those first two drives, Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell was quick to make a promise about the Vikings' impending third drive that was about to begin.
"We'll put a drive together, go tie this thing up," he said.
The Vikings did not, in fact, tie the game up.
The Bears defense just made Kevin O'Connell eat his words
It ultimately ended with a field goal, but O'Connell sounded real sure of himself when he guaranteed a touchdown on live television.
The Vikings started out that third offensive drive with a little luck from Bears cornerback Nahshon Wright who was called for a huge defensive pass interference. The flag gave Minnesota a free 42 yards; not a great start for Chicago's defensive unit, there.
But, after the Vikings ran it a couple of times on their following two snaps, the Bears defense then clamped down. Minnesota running back Jordan Mason got stuffed for a three-yard loss. The Vikings followed it up with an incompletion from JJ McCarthy to star wide receiver Justin Jefferson.
Then, Will Reichard came on to knock through a 31-yard field goal to make it 7-3.
Sure, the Vikings scored some points and got themselves on the board. That third drive went a little better than their first two which ended with punts. However, the Bears defense ultimately shut them down when it mattered most and held the Vikings to a field goal.
