Bears' training camp position battle is painfully not even close to being decided

This could take a while to decide.

It's been a week into Chicago Bears' training camp and there is one position battle that is not even close to be decided.

Every fan has been watching to see how it will go with quarterback Caleb Williams' blind side position and who will win the job. The Bears' left tackle position is currently between last year's starter Braxton Jones, Kiran Amegadjie, and rookie second round pick Ozzy Trapilo.

ESPN Bears beat reporter Courtney Cronin's latest training camp intel report does not have any of them really sticking out as all three have had first-team reps in practice.

"All three players in competition to win the left tackle job --Braxton Jones, Kiran Amegadjie and Ozzy Trapilo -- saw reps with the first-team offensive line during team periods. This competition doesn't feel anywhere close to being decided."

What does it say that all three left tackles are taking first-team reps on Bears' offense?

Most would think Jones would go in as the clear-cut starter since he was in the role last year, but his late-season injury last year caused him to miss time during the offseason. He still graded high, according to Pro Football Focus, with an overall grade of 77.4, ranking 21st of 140 tackles in the league. The loss of valuable reps in Bears head coach Ben Johnson's new offense opened the doors for others to compete for the job.

Trapilo was brought in from the draft out of Boston College to at minimum give the Bears the depth on the offensive line that was desperately needed. He has a legit shot at being a starter with Chicago, seeing him as a future starter at one of the tackle positions. That future could start sooner than expected.

Amegadjie only started one of six games last year for the Bears as he entered as a third-round pick for Chicago. He didn't perform as well, posting a PFF overall grade of 40.3, which ranked 135th among 140 tackles in the NFL.

If there is one position group the Bears should be more picky about, left tackle should be that one. Last year's offensive line allowed 68 sacks, the most in the NFL, and worked diligently to rebuild it. They need to make sure everyone starting in 2025 is qualified for the job.

It is somewhat odd that Jones has not taken over the job after a strong season last year. Hopefully, that's a good sign that Trapilo and Amegadjie are just that good that they deserve more reps as well.

This is either a good problem to have, or the Bears might be in trouble finding the right man for the job.
