When the Chicago Bears hired Ben Johnson as their head coach this offseason, fans expected an offensive fireworks show that would erase decades of miserable, plodding performances. Following a series of aggressive personnel additions to the unit, there was no doubt that this would transform into one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL.
While there have been encouraging signs from Caleb Williams and his offense, especially in recent weeks, fans haven't seen anything close to what Johnson was able to consistently produce in his time as the Detroit Lions' offensive coordinator.
There are more than a few reasons for the slow start, but a weak rushing attack deserves part of the blame. The Bears rank in the bottom half of the league in both rushing yards per game and carries of 20 or more yards. Running back D'Andre Swift has been decent, but Chicago could use a bit more juice in the backfield. NFL Spin Zone's Lou Scataglia has a solution, suggesting a trade for superstar back Breece Hall.
Bears listed as a top landing spot for Breece Hall
After an up-and-down start to the season, there's no telling whether the Bears will be looking to buy or sell at the upcoming trade deadline. General manager Ryan Poles has been aggressive in the past, but this team seems to be more than one player from contention. Still, a trade for a running back of Hall's caliber could unlock a new level of Johnson's offense.
Despite a productive start to the 2025 season, Scataglia thinks the Jets' back could be on the move soon. He says, "In the final year of his contract but still just 24 years old, Breece Hall could be on the move. The New York Jets are a disastrous 0-4, and the front office could definitely fetch a solid return for Hall, who I believe is better than most people think. He's been a productive player despite being on the Jets, a team that makes offense seem impossible."
Hall would add a desperately needed explosive element to the Bears' rushing attack. He has the speed to break through the first level of the defense and turn chunk gains into long touchdowns. His skill as a receiver would give a boost to Williams, who is improving in his ability to find his check-down options.

If the Jets decide to sell their star running back at the trade deadline, there should be quite a few suitors. Ben Johnson and the Bears should be first in line.
