Bears veteran on the verge of losing his job that was already lost months ago

Tyler Scott was a fifth-round pick by the Chicago Bears, so it will be hard to call him a bust. However, things have not worked out with him and the team that drafted him.

Gary Davenport went through one player on every team that should be cut this offseason, and he chose Scott as the most likely option for Chicago.

"There was a time when it appeared Tyler Scott might actually make a name for himself in Chicago. As a rookie, he made four starts and caught 17 passes for 168 yards in 439 snaps.

But in 2024, Scott had one catch for five yards while playing 20 offensive snaps. He played just 55 snaps total for the season.

Again, when you have a wide receiver buried on the depth chart (Scott is buried even deeper in 2025) who contributes little to nothing on special teams, that's an easy cut"

Can Scott find a way to stay on the team in 2025?

Scott is only in his third NFL season, so his cheap salary and team control into next year make him enticing to keep. However, regressing from his first year to his second was not good, and more than that, this offseason has stacked the deck against him.

The head coach and offensive coordinator who drafted Scott are long gone. Even the quarterback that he was drafted to play with is gone. Ben Johnson and his staff clearly did not like the skill players because they did a mini-overhaul.

The team already had DJ Moore and Rome Odunze. Then, the new staff helped bring in Luther Burden and Olamide Zaccheus to compete for the starting slot role. That pushed Scott down to five at best.

However, the team also added notable veterans Devin Duvernay and Miles Boykin. Duvernay is a supreme return option, and Boykin has stuck in the NFL because his athletic traits flash on special teams. As the five and six receivers, you have to serve a role beyond offense. These two provide it, and Scott does not.

The Bears even have Jahdae Walker, a rookie UDFA who has flashed at times this summer. While he is a UDFA, his rookie status will entice the team, and once again, this means that Ben Johnson signed off on adding him, whereas he did not have a say in Scott's signing.

Scott is going to fight for the sixth spot, but that seems tough to obtain. He may not even hold onto the seventh spot on the depth chart, almost ensuring his spot on the roster is gone. It may be a bigger surprise if he lasts through cutdown day.
