Ben Johnson can't escape his former player being attached with Bears as landing spot

Everyone wants this to happen.

The Chicago Bears still have two massive positions the fan base would love for them to address in free agency or trade before the 2026 season begins: edge rusher and left tackle.

Luckily for the Bears, they have an option at left tackle who is sitting out there, ready to be signed now and start right away. Bleacher Report writer Alex Kay named some free agents that are surprisingly still available and named potential landing spots for them. Kay had former Detroit Lions left tackle Taylor Decker as one of the surprises and has the Bears number one on the list as a potential landing spot.

"It's mildly surprising Decker has yet to sign with a new team, but it would be an absolute shocker if he hasn't been scooped up by the start of training camp. Decker is a quality starter who can contribute at a serviceable level for a Super Bowl hopeful, making him one of the best possible free-agent targets left standing."

Another Taylor Decker recommendation for the Bears

This has been very common over the last two months, with everyone pushing for the Bears to sign Decker and have him start at left tackle. Ozzy Trapilo is out for the first part of the 2026 season with an injury, leaving the left tackle job most likely to be Braxton Jones.

Decker makes way too much sense for the Bears, as he played under head coach Ben Johnson for three seasons when Johnson was the offensive coordinator. The only Pro Bowl selection for Decker in his 10-year career came in 2024, Johnson's last year as the Lions' OC before taking the Bears head-coaching job.

While the Bears are not necessarily in desperation mode for a left tackle, Decker certainly feels like a much better option than what they have now. Jones is poor in run blocking, Jedrick Wills hasn't played football in about two years, and Theo Benedet struggles mightily in pass protection.

If the Bears want to have the whole package at left tackle, Decker is by far the best option they have and should try to secure him on a one-year deal.
