Ben Johnson can’t wait long before making a bold Bears benching

This was supposed to be fixed.

There was plenty which went wrong for the Chicago Bears in their Week 1 collapse against the Minnesota Vikings. Whether we're talking concerns with Caleb Williams or up front on the offensive line, there were still very familiar red flags.

One of them, in particular, came from one of this year's free agent signings in starting right guard Jonah Jackson. Against the Vikings, Jackson played arguably the worst of all five starting offensive linemen.

For starters, Jackson's inability to keep Williams clean was evident. Williams had most of his pressure come from directly in front of him which was, many times, because of Jackson. He was the culprit on several occasions. Jackson was so bad, in fact, that Pro Football Focus gave him a pass block grade of just 22.6 on the night.

That's not only bad. It's abysmal. It's embarrassing. It might even make fans long for the Lucas Patrick days.

Jonah Jackson better be on a short leash with Ben Johnson going forward

Jackson was called for two penalties on the night and was also awful in the run game, too. But, we don't need to go too far into detail, there. It was blatant for any fans watching the game.

The biggest point, here, is that Johnson cannot afford to waste precious time in developing Williams. Now, the quarterback has a lot of things he needs to clean up, himself. But, if we're looking strictly from a perspective of every position doing their job, the Bears need much more from Jackson.

If the former Lion and Ram cannot get it together, Chicago will need to either try rookie Luke Newman or second-year pro Kiran Amegadjie in place of him. Maybe the latter could be a secret sauce for this team after Amegadjie quickly looked out of place at tackle in the NFL. Who knows. To be frank, neither one is the best option.

If neither are valid replacements, though, Ben Johnson needs to be in the ear of Ryan Poles about trading for a guard.

All options have to be on the table. The performance from Jackson was inexcusable. If he doesn't turn things around, Johnson can't wait much longer. This past offseason was supposed to be about fixing the offensive line and, so far, it doesn't look all that fixed in certain areas.
