Being the head coach of an NFL franchise is both a dream and a responsibility, regardless of the franchise's previous reputation.

It's not something that should be taken lightly, and Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson has clearly gotten the message. Johnson understood his role from the start, and he hasn't been shy about telling the media his intentions.

Speaking at Halas Hall

Johnson was asked about this very topic specifically during his press conference at Halas Hall, Bears headquarters. This question came during the Q&A portion of the presser, and Johnson did not hesitate with his remarks.

"The role of the head coach is not to be a cheerleader, it’s to say it like it is. If something pops up, and I feel like it needs to be said, then I say it. If I don’t, then we keep it moving."
Ben Johnson

The head coach job is all about balance, the duality of balancing the offense and defense. What Johnson has to say shows his philosophy when it comes to being the head coach of a team that finished the last two seasons at or near the bottom the the league.

Johnson's leadership was something desperately needed in Chicago, after the Bears finished at the bottom of the NFC North for three seasons running. With the last head coach already fired from his next job, the Bears are enjoying accountability and directness under Johnson, a breath of fresh air for long time Bears fans.

"I think we’ve got a great group of guys, we’ve got a prideful group. We’ve earned the division title, we’ve earned the #2 seed in the NFC. Those are things we’re certainly proud about and at the same time, you know, the season’s not over."
Ben Johnson

While Coach Johnson can move confidently into the playoffs, that's not true for all franchises. Johnson may be listing accomplishments from the season so far, but he's also clearly dialed in to the task at hand. This season is not over, and with skill and determination, it won't be any time soon.

The arrival of Johnson has shifted the entire culture of the Bears, from the players, all the way to the fans at home. He brings honesty, accountability, and intelligent passion. Being direct is a whole lot easier when everyone is aligned on the same goal, something Johnson was explicit about from day one.
