Now that the Chicago Bears are a few days removed from one of the worst losses in recent memory, head coach Ben Johnson is tasked with somehow moving forward.
During his time with the media, Wednesday, Johnson was asked about his quarterback as per usual. When discussing Caleb Williams, one particular comment stood out.
"His approach to the game right now is what it needs to be," Johnson said.
Ben Johnson tells us everything while saying very little about Caleb Williams
The growing panic, or even mild concern, that has started to rise about Williams since his Week 1 showing against the Minnesota Vikings is definitely not nothing. There is validity to concern, but I'm not so sure about those panicking.
Two games into Williams' first season with Johnson, there is no way fans should have expected this thing to be perfected. It's not realistic.
If we're talking about things like Williams consistently overthrowing passes in Week 1 against Minnesota, then we can certainly have that conversation. Like everyone else, I watched several of those passes sail and wondered exactly what in the world was happening.
It's hard to defend Williams overthrowing so many wide-open targets, and in one game, mind you. However, the nuances of the game go beyond simply missing open targets. Williams has shown the ability to go through his progressions as evidenced in Week 2 against the Lions. He was much more comfortable in that game than how he looked against Minnesota.
Take away the fact that the Bears gave up 52 points and look strictly at Williams' play, and you really can't be all that mad.
With Johnson letting us know that Williams' approach is exactly where it needs to be, that tells us, in a roundabout way, that Williams' preparation and mindset are on point. Over anything else, these two things might be the biggest keys to his success under Johnson.
If Williams remains steadfast, mentally, he'll be able to absorb all of the coaching and direction from Johnson while putting it to use in the correct manner.
But, like any good thing, it's going to take time.
This isn't Justin Fields or Mitch Trubisky we're talking about. Williams is a real NFL quarterback who can go through progressions and improvise with the best of them, at times. He needs some more time and refinement within this brand-new system.

For those panicking over Williams, why don't you direct your worry toward the other side of the ball and let Johnson have a few more weeks with his second-year quarterback?
