In the Chicago Bears' Week 16 comeback over the Green Bay Packers, there were a few select plays that fans will not soon forget. With just a handful of minutes remaining, several things had to go right for the Bears to pull this one out -- and they did.
The final domino to fall was the incredible, 46-yard touchdown pass from Caleb Williams to D.J. Moore in overtime that won the game, right then and there. Following the win, head coach Ben Johnson was asked about the play and revealed that it had been installed recently.
“That was one we put in on Thursday in practice and it almost looked identical to how we ran it," he told Bears media.
Ben Johnson is continuing to prove he is 1 of 1 in Chicago
First of all, the fact that Chicago put this play in just two days before the game is quite impressive. That's not a whole lot of practice for what ended up being such a monumental play in the game. Secondly, some fans might not be able to help but think back to the Matt Eberflus era and laugh.
Was there ever a time after a win when Eberflus was asked about a key play in the game and talked about that week's install? Sure, he was more of the defensive guy. But, even thinking back to the likes of Shane Waldron or Luke Getsy, there weren't even many opportunities to comment on that.
The Bears didn't get a whole lot of wins under Eberflus, to begin with, which makes this a funny and unfair comparison.
Still, it is such a breath of fresh air to watch the Bears not only win a gritty comeback game, but also for the head coach to talk about a game-winning play that was installed just a couple of days beforehand.
Truly, there are no significant moments I can recall where Eberflus was able to give a similar answer. In fact, most of the time, it was the polar opposite.
Most of the time, Eberflus spent his media sessions explaining poor decisions or defending decisions he didn't make, such as one infamous timeout that was not taken on a very memorable Thanksgiving Day.
Yet, here we are, with a Bears head coach who is getting a chance to explain key plays that he specifically installed that week, which wound up being the difference in a game. The stark difference is so apparent, and this holiday season, let's take another moment to be grateful for the change of fortune.
