It's the NFL's oldest rivalry, but until recently, it hadn't been much of one. The Green Bay Packers have largely dominated the Chicago Bears in the last couple of decades, and that's something that football fans everywhere have been wishing would change.
But no one has wanted the rivalry to come back as much as Bears fans have. It had gotten old watching the same old song and dance for years on end. Very rarely are both the Bears and Packers good teams when they square off, but Saturday night, that's exactly what we got to witness.
NFL legend and broadcaster, J.J. Watt, took to social media to share some brief thoughts after the Bears' thrilling overtime win over the Packers. In short, what he said is something we have been hoping to see come true for a very long time.
"Football is better when the Packers-Bears rivalry is alive and well.
This is awesome."
Yes, yes it is, J.J. What was even more awesome is seeing the win come in such a dramatic fashion.
J.J. Watt's comment on the Bears-Packers rivalry is exactly what Chicago has been long hoping for
Let's be real for a second, here. Whether it's been Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, or, more recently, Jordan Love, Bears fans have been sick of getting beaten by this team for years now. It hasn't mattered whether it's a backup, either, as one could see in Week 16. Yes, even Malik Willis had some excellent moments against these Bears.
The Packers have just had the Bears' number more often than not, and it's been tough to watch for many years now.
But, finally, the Bears have the right head coach. They have a franchise quarterback. And, they have the personnel in place to build on something special.
Part of that building, over the coming years, is hopefully going to include many more victories over the Packers. And, even if some of those matchups end in a loss to Green Bay, Bears fans can at least find solace in the fact that they are rooting for a competent, competitive team once again.
It's been since the Lovie Smith era that Bears fans have waited to watch a legitimate, competitive team take on the Packers. And, no, the short blip under Matt Nagy doesn't count. That was hardly longer than a moment. It was one season.

Now, Johnson, Williams, and company have this franchise set up for long-term success and some phenomenal matchups, including the league's greatest rivalry of all time.
This is, indeed, awesome.
