Oh man that's rough.

What a performance it was for Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams as he almost completed his seventh fourth quarter comeback, but fell short as the Bears lost to the San Francisco 49ers 42-38 in Week 17 action.

Williams finished the game completing 25 of 42 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns, along with 18 rushing yards in the loss. On the final play of the game, though, Williams short-hopped a pass in the end zone to Jahdae Walker after running around in the pocket for over five seconds.

After the game, Williams described the chaos of the final play, admitting it seemed doomed from the start.

"We ended up getting lined up with not much time (on the play clock). We were slightly lined up wrong. I didn't have enough time to be able to fix it," Williams said via CHGO. "We just had to try to make something out of nothing in that situation. And then we had a shot. With all of that going on; time running down, us misaligning, things like that. We had a shot, and I've just gotta give my guys a shot in that situation."

Rough final play doesn't take away from the performance of Williams and Bears' offense

Some of the conversation will be about Williams's accuracy issues, like it has been all season. It's just a part of having Williams as the quarterback in 2025 that he's not the most accurate passer and will need time to work on that.

He made some great throws in this game and seemed more precise with his passes than he has been in most games. Williams was asked to do a lot more since the defense failed them all game, allowing nearly 500 yards of offense.

Usually, the Bears could lean on the running game as they had 110 yards on the ground at five yards per carry. With Chicago down for most of the game, Williams had to make explosive plays to keep his team in the contest. He threw long touchdowns to Colston Loveland and Luther Burden III, helping keep them in the game.

The last play was unfortunate as Bears fans would love more organization there at the end, but a salute to Williams for fighting and keeping Chicago in that game, because it would have been a blowout without him.
