Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams really took some major strides from his rookie season to last year.

A big reason for that was the overhaul of the coaching staff led by head coach Ben Johnson, which seemed to have completely changed the trajectory of Williams' career, as he had a stellar 2025 season under Johnson's new, complex scheme. Bears quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett spoke to the media about Williams' progression in this offense and how the young QB seems to have full command of the unit heading into Year 3, thanks to last season's development.

"You started seeing it towards the end of the year, a good clip of the ownership and being able to orchestrate our offense," Barrett said via Bears reporter Josh Buckhalter. "And then this year, with the system not being new and calling the same plays, I think with that slowing down for him a little bit, and with that, he'll be able to handle that much more at the line of scrimmage, communication, and I think it will be good to see in the Spring how that is translated from the end of the season to now.

Caleb Williams is getting good control of Ben Johnson's offense

Bears fans might remember the tough road Williams had in Johnson's offense at the beginning, when reports surfaced during training camp about the struggles the young QB and the offense faced. That led to some tough coaching from Johnson, but it also showed that it all paid off in great play, with the offense ranking among the top 10.

Expectations for Williams in his third season in the NFL are going to be through the roof now that fans have seen the potential with him and Johnson together. Missing the playoffs is not an option, and even a Wild Card appearance isn't good enough, since Williams has superstar potential given the insane throws he can make.

While things might have been a lot for Williams, he seems to have a better idea of what Johnson likes and the kind of offense that the Bears want to run now. That will go a long way in making 2026 easier on him, and Johnson adding more to his plate.
