Caleb Williams keeps Mitch Trubisky in the past with latest Bears' passing record
Chicago Bears' rookie quarterback Caleb Williams has been putting on a show during the team's Week 12 game against the Minnesota Vikings.
Despite trailing the Vikings 14-10 at halftime, Williams was excellent for the Bears. During the first half of action, Williams completed 16 of 22 passes for a total of 176 yards.
With his first completed pass pass in the third quarter, Williams also etched his name in Bears' history. Williams now holds the record for the most passing yards in a single season by a Bears' rookie quarterback. The mark was previously held by Mitch Trubisky. Trubisky passed for 2,193 yards during his rookie season with the Bears in 2017.
Following his four-touchdown performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars during in Week 6, Williams seemed to be well on his way toward rewriting the history book for Bears' quarterbacks. However, consecutive struggles against the Washington Commanders, Arizona Cardinals, and New England Patriots seemed to have silenced the talk of Williams instantly becoming the best quarterback in the history of the Bears' organization.
Williams' struggles against the Commanders, Cardinals, and Patriots are a large part of the reason why the Bears made a switch at offensive coordinator. Shane Waldron was fired prior to the Bears' game against the Green Bay Packers. Against the Packers, even though Williams did not throw for a touchdown, many consider the game to be best of his career.
If Williams continues his upward trajectory with Thomas Brown as the Bears' offensive coordinator, Brown likely will improve his candidacy to be the next head coach of the Bears. While the Bears' offense, for the second week in a row, has shown improvement under Brown, Eberflus' coaching staff remains a hot topic due to repeated failures. Assuming those failures continue, Eberflus will find himself out of a job by the end of the season.
