There was a lot of hope and excitement surrounding Week 18 as Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams was closing in on franchise history.
Williams would end up breaking Erik Kramer's franchise record for passing yards in a season, but was 58 yards short of being the first Bears quarterback to pass for over 4,000 yards in one year. All of that didn't matter as the Bears lost to the Detroit Lions 19-16 to close out the season, but still got the number two seed thanks to the Washington Commanders beating the Philadelphia Eagles 24-17.
For the game, Williams completed 20 of 33 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns to one interception. Even with the record, Williams didn't care about getting that or the number two seed, as the loss stung hard for him.
“No, we need to win the game,” Williams said via 670 The Score's Chris Emma. “Didn’t want to leave it up to another team to be in the seed we wanted to be in."
“That (record) is the number, and so be it.”
Williams was not pleased with losing to the Lions again
The Bears are not in a great spot going into the playoffs, having lost three of their last five games to close out the season, with the team on a two-game losing streak. It's only going to get tougher as they enter the playoffs as the number two seed without momentum.
Williams finished the regular season completing 58.1% of his passes for 3,942 yards and 27 touchdowns to seven interceptions. He also ran for 388 yards and three touchdowns in 17 games.
Overall, the stats show excellent progression for Williams, except for the accuracy, which will hopefully be resolved in the future. He showed he can improve his decision-making and allowed only 24 sacks on the season, 44 fewer than in 2024.

The real test of where Williams is in his development will come in the NFC Wild Card game against the Green Bay Packers. Another win against them would undoubtedly add to his young legacy.
