Caleb Williams has no reason to worry about a 'Madden curse' (and here's why)

Fear not, Bears fans.

Chicago Bears fans feel like they're living in a dream right now. The 2025 season saw the Bears come up just short of reaching the NFC Championship Game, and now, quarterback Caleb Williams is the cover athlete for Madden 27. What fantasy world are we living in, Bears fans?

The flip side of Williams being crowned as the next Madden cover athlete is that it's going to bring up the ol' Madden curse crap that people are still spewing. For those who might be unfamiliar with the Madden curse, allow me to fill you in.

For years, it was tradition for whoever graced the cover of Madden to suffer some sort of setback the following year. Some examples of the curse taking effect were when Michael Vick suffered an injury in the preseason right after being on the cover in 2004, Shaun Alexander battling injuries in 2007, Peyton Hillis not amounting to much after being on the 2012 cover, and the most recent example being Christian McCaffrey getting injured after being on the cover in 2024.

There was definitely a strong argument for the curse being real, but, fortunately, it's mostly taken a step back in recent years. Tom Brady was on the cover in 2018 and went on to win MVP, and Patrick Mahomes was the Madden 20 cover athlete and won a Super Bowl and Super Bowl MVP title.

Bears fans shouldn't worry about Caleb Williams being a Madden curse victim

Williams absolutely deserves the honor of being on the Madden cover, even if he wasn't the MVP or in the running for the title. He did what no Bears quarterback had done before and made Chicago a fun team to watch in the 2025 season.

While it's understandable that fans might be panicking a bit about the Madden curse, it's still cool to see a Bears player grace the cover. That's never happened before, and for once, a Bears quarterback is the guy to represent the game. Pretty cool.

Hopefully, Williams can join Brady, Mahomes, Drew Brees, Calvin Johnson, and the other Madden cover athletes who have said "What curse?" after being featured on the front of the prestigious video game.
