The Chicago Bears signed veteran safety Xavier Woods to help add more talent to a banged-up secondary. That would not be the last move made.
The Bears announced the signings of two more defensive backs: Brandon Hill and William Wright. To make room for them, the Bears announced the releases of defensive backs K.C. Eziomume and Gervarrius Owens with an Injury designation.
Owens and Dallis Flowers got hurt earlier in the week, resulting in Flowers being placed on IR and Owens being cut. Coby Bryant was the major injury that led to be signed. Hill and Wright now join Woods as the newest members of the secondary after working out with the team on Friday.

Hill has only appeared in two career NFL games with the Houston Texans back in 2023, without recording a stat. Wright spent time with the Denver Broncos but has not played in an NFL game.
These moves are more about adding bodies to training camp and bringing depth to the secondary. Hill and Wright will have to fight hard to make the team, as they feel like either cut-day candidates or practice squad members.
Woods is entering his 10th season in the NFL and has started over 100 games. He has a much better chance of making the 53-man roster.
The biggest thing about the situation is the upcoming position battle over the next four weeks between Woods and Cam Lewis. They are fighting for the other starting safety job alongside rookie Dillon Thieneman.
Even with that being a major storyline in training camp now, who else will make the roster at safety is another question that needs to be answered. Hill and Wright don't have quite the NFL experience, so the Bears are leaning on young players to step up in backup roles. The chances of them making the roster are pretty low at the moment, but the preseason can change that narrative quickly.

This situation continues to be one the Bears did not want to deal with at the moment, as they were hoping to have better results from the safeties and healthier ones. Now they have to add a bunch of new players in the hopes they can find the next Nahshon Wright to step up and help.
