Bears have revealed their Coby Bryant backup plan with signing 10-year vet

The Chicago Bears have lot quite a bit of talent in the secondary and knew they needed to bring in some real firepower to help out.

Coby Bryant was the biggest injury of the week for the Bears at training camp, but the team has already had multiple injuries at defensive back. They decided to do something about it and add some talent.

The Beras announced on social media that they have signed 10-year defensive back Xavier Woods and placed defensive back Dallis Flowers on the reserve/injured list. Woods have played for four different NFL teams, including the Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Vikings, Carolina Panthers, and last season with the Tennessee Titans. Flowers suffered a serious injury in training camp this week.

Woods is an experienced defensive back who has played in 134 games and started in 121. In his NFL career, he has racked up 660 tackle, 50 pass deflections, 15 interceptions, 11 tackles for loss, seven quarterback hits, five forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, and two sacks.

Last season with the Titans, he finished with 39 tackles, three pass deflections, two interceptions, and one sack in 11 games played, with 10 of them being starts. Pro Football Focus gave him an overall grade of 65.4, ranking 46th out of 98 safeties in the NFL in 2025.

This is a good move for the Bears, as it gives them the insurance policy they needed. Cam Lewis will most likely still start with rookie Dillon Thieneman at safety, but Woods has a chance to push him for the starting job.

The Bears had to do something to bring in experience and a player who has played at a high level. Woods has years of experience and is a good player, so this should work out.

One of training camp's biggest position battles just got a lot more interesting at safety. Woods will have some catching up to do, but he was in Dallas when Bears defensive backs coach Al Harris was a coach there, so there might be a reason for the signing. That connection could help Woods land a starting role on the team.

At least Woods has less than four weeks to make an impression on defensive coordinator Dennis Allen. For now, this feels like an important move that the team needed to make.
