The potential of the Chicago Bears' offense should be higher than last year, but a new weapon might just elevate the unit if he ends up exceeding expectations.

Many were shocked when the Bears took LSU wide receiver Zavion Thomas in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft, especially since he was projected to go on Day 3. The 4.28-second speed that Thomas brings is what attracted the Bears to selecting him as their new offensive coordinator. Press Taylor knows the potential Thomas brings to the table.

“You see the speed. He is going to have to go earn it,' Taylor said via CHGO. "It’s really just growing as an entire player.”

Bears' massive gamble with Zavion Thomas could really pay off

Thomas is a weapon who can do it all as a wide receiver, running back, and special teams returner. Speed can't be taught, but under head coach Ben Johnson and Taylor, the two will teach Thomas how to use that speed to his advantage.

The wide receiver room is deep, and Thomas might not get to play right away, according to Bears general manager Ryan Poles. While all indications are that Thomas will be more of a returner, the possibility of him playing running back is starting to creep up, which would be an interesting move.

Chicago just wants to get Thomas out there and make sure the ball is in his hands so that they can take advantage of that speed. When he has the ball in his hands, it can be magic, but his college career showed that there were some inconsistencies with catching the ball, despite being a burner and a good route runner.

Johnson and Taylor are going to have their work cut out with Thomas, but if they can develop him the right way, the Bears just got a weapon they have not seen since Devin Hester.
