The Chicago Bears certainly got people talking about their third-round selection of the 2026 NFL Draft with LSU wide receiver Zavion Thomas.
While Thomas is a speedy receiver with a 4.28-second 40-yard dash time, many questioned whether he was a reach and picked too soon, given where experts had him. Bears general manager Ryan Poles explained how the team envisions seeing Thomas' role in head coach Ben Johnson's offense.
"So this is a tough system," Poles said via ESPN's Courtney Cronin. "It’s going to be a challenge for him to break through quickly (on offense). But we’re going to open that competition up for all of these guys coming in. I think we feel really good about the return ability that he has. And then he’ll be with the rest of the guys to learn the offense, how does he do that, how fast does he come along? We all talk to our receivers and it’s a challenging system. So, maybe that role starts small and grows over time. But I don’t want to put a cap on that. If he comes in and downloads fast and he’s up and running, we’ll see what happens."

That quote from Poles should concern Bears fans a bit, with Thomas being a third-round pick and expectations a bit different from those for an undrafted player. Luther Burden was a second-round pick last year, and he ended up with playing time. What does it say about Thomas that they expect him to be more of a special teams player?
Thomas was always going to be a returner for the Bears, and Johnson wanted him for his speed to add to their offense. Bears fans would prefer Thomas to play a bit more than what it sounds like from Poles.
Chicago has talent at receiver with Burden and Rome Odunze leading the way. Kalif Raymond and Jahdae Walker should be in competition with Thomas for the WR3 and WR4 jobs.

Poles made some troubling comments about Thomas, which puts the rookie in a position to leave a bad first impression on the fan base. Bears fans hope that Thomas will perform better than what Poles is saying and become the next great wide receiver Chicago has produced in the last two years.
