The Chicago Bears could go a lot of different directions in the 2026 NFL Draft, and mock drafts have reflected that. However, almost all mock drafts have one common theme this year: the Bears are drafting a defensive player.Â
Courntey Cronin of ESPN noted that while the Bears have not taken a defensive player in the first round of the draft since 2018, it does look like this year will be the time when it finally happens.Â
Will the Chicago Bears draft a defensive player in round 1 of the 2026 NFL Draft?
Mock drafts have the Bears going in many different directions, but almost every direction points back to defense. There are defensive tackles linked to the team, such as Kayden McDonald. Almost all Bears fans want them to take an edge rusher with their first pick. If they do not go defensive line, it may be because a safety is by far the best player on the board, and they could not pass on it. They have not been linked to a linebacker at pick 25, but every other spot has a chance to be the first-round pick.Â
On the offensive side of the ball, there is a little less speculation. Cronin did admit that if they went towards the offensive side of the ball, it would be a tackle they take. The team has a lot of options at left tackle, but many of the names competing for the spot are coming off injuries.Â
However, if they do not go left tackle, any other offensive spot would be shocking. Quarterback is set, and there are no running backs worth taking at that slot. While they traded DJ Moore, it will open snaps for Luther Burden. Beyond that, with Cole Kmet and Colston Loveland, they plan to run two tight end sets more than most teams. With all of the other four offensive linemen locked into starting spots, it leaves just one option on offense.Â

Still, Ben Johnson had last offseason to make the unit look strong, and he hit. Now, it is time for Dennis Allen to invest resources on his side of the football. Look for defense to not only be the round 1 pick, but also the majority of the picks throughout the draft.
