Bears fans won't cry over spilt milk after losing edge rusher in free agency

It's okay for him to go.

It's already been a tough offseason for the Chicago Bears with losing multiple starters and depth players on defense, but this latest loss won't be the end of the world.

Some key departures from the team include Kevin Byard, Jaquan Brisker, Nahshon Wright, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and Tremaine Edmunds. There could be more coming, with another added to that list.

Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman told reporters at the league's meeting that they are signing former Bears defensive end Joe Tryon-Shoyinka. Last season, the Bears traded for Tryon-Shoyinka midway through the season with the Cleveland Browns and racked up just nine tackles and one quarterback hit in eight games.

When the Bears first made that trade with the Browns to get Tryon-Shoyinka, it was more about getting depth at the edge rusher position, with Dayo Odeyingbo just suffering a season-ending injury. Outside of that, Tryon-Shoyinka did not do much for the Bears in the games he played in.

The Bears got way more production from Austin Booker, who had just returned from his own injury, and he became the starting edge rusher on the opposite side of Montez Sweat. Tryon-Shoyinka made a bit more impact on special teams than on defense.

Chicago couldn't bring back Tryon-Shoyinka right now anyway, since they only have $1 million in cap space. The Bears were unlikely to bring him back, as he didn't provide much value in defensive coordinator Dennis Allen's scheme.

More than likely now, the Bears are going to use the first two rounds of the 2026 NFL Draft to find the next edge rusher that could be in the rotation. Chicago seems to be high on Booker, so he most likely gets the nod as one of the starting edge rushers in 2026.

Tryon-Shoyinka won't have a long-lasting memory in Chicago, as he was just another depth player on the team. The Bears will move on and easily find his replacement soon enough.
