The Chicago Bears finally catch a break in the secondary after bringing back a defender from last year's roster.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the Bears have re-signed Jaylon Jones to a one-year deal. Jones has been on the Bears' roster since 2022 and has made six starts in 56 games he's appeared in.

Last season, Jones racked up 16 tackles and one forced fumble in 15 games with one start. He was key in helping the secondary out during the injuries to Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon.

Chicago needed to make sure it got some kind of depth coming back to the secondary after the miserable week of pretty much losing all their key guys from last year. Bears secondary members who have left this week include Kevin Byard, Jaquan Brisker, Jonathan Owens, Nahshon Wright, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson.

Jones has primarily been a backup nickel to Gordon and will continue to fill that role. Don't expect him to play a massive role there, but his special teams game, though, might be taken to new heights.

Josh Blackwell is the top guy on special teams in Chicago, but that unit lost a key guy in Owens, who departed to join the Indianapolis Colts. Watch for Jones to step up on special teams and take over that spot for Owens as the next top guy.

It doesn't appear as though the Bears are going to be doing much of anything else on signings over the next few weeks, since they only have over $6 million in cap space. They will focus more on re-signing guys and on creating cap space for the draft.

Jones's return will be an underrated move that adds depth to the secondary while keeping another weapon on special teams.
