Bears have no reason to sign a recent cut with strong Matt Eberflus roots

For several years now, Chicago Bears fans have loved reacting to any notable name that's been cut. It's what we're conditioned to do after being around mediocre-at-best teams for the majority of our lives.

But those days are mostly over. This roster is set at several positions, which means general manager Ryan Poles doesn't necessarily need to be paying close attention to every single cut made around the league.

Thursday, the Indianapolis Colts released star nickel cornerback Kenny Moore after they were unable to find a trade partner. There may be some Bears fans who make the initial connection between Moore and former Bears head coach Matt Eberflus, and a few might even clamor for Chicago to sign the former Pro Bowler.

But, now is not the time for a move like this.

The Chicago Bears' secondary can do without Matt Eberflus' former Pro Bowl cornerback

Why the Eberflus connection? Well, he's certainly a name that draws emotion out of this fan base, isn't he?

Let's elaborate a bit.

For those who may not know or remember, Eberflus was the defensive coordinator in Indianapolis prior to accepting the Bears' head coaching gig. He was there from 2018-2021.

Moore went undrafted out of Valdosta State and wound up starting his career with the New England Patriots. After the Patriots cut him loose just before the start of the regular season, he signed with the Colts.

In 2018, when Eberflus took the reins, Moore became a full-time starter. By 2021, he earned his first and only Pro Bowl bid under Eberflus.

The Bears, in their current state, don't need to go after Moore, though. This secondary is going to be a huge strength.

Starting outside are Jaylon Johnson and presumably Tyrique Stevenson. Kyler Gordon has the nickel spot on lockdown, too, which is where Moore would play most comfortably.

And, even though Adam Schefter may have called Moore a safety in his original report, the Bears are obviously also set there, as well. This year's free agent prize, Coby Bryant, was then paired with first-round pick Dillon Thieneman out of Oregon.

So, again, there is no need to pursue Moore. And, for those fans who might suggest the Bears can never have enough talent, they'd be right.

However, Moore is still a starting-caliber slot cornerback in this league. He will catch on somewhere and start for another team. Yes, he'd be a phenomenal depth piece to have in Chicago, but he'll find immediate work elsewhere.
