You wouldn't be going out on a limb telling Chicago Bears fans that Luther Burden III is going to experience a massive breakout in his second season. It's the low-hanging fruit right now.

Every analyst is running with this narrative.

Now, as a Bears fan, please keep it coming. This fan base will take all of the hype and all of the positive narratives they can get. After all, it is the offseason.

But, there are some breakdowns and narratives which are built different, and that's where noted wide receiver expert, Matt Harmon, comes in. Having gone on the Check the Mic podcast recently, Harmon talked up Burden but dove deeper into what makes him so special, and why we should especially believe in him as a Bear.

As one of the most well-respected and knowledgeable wide receiver experts in the industry, Harmon began by talking about Burden's college tape which, if you look at where he was drafted and wanted to know why he fell to the second round, his initial talking points made a lot of sense.

"You could tell ... I need a little bit more from you buddy -- in college. He would run himself into leverage and it was like, that was it. Here's the deal, that is never going to fly in Ben Johnson's offense and Antwaan Randle El's receiver room. So, when he went to Chicago, it was like, 'if it's going to work somewhere, it's going to work there.'"

Luther Burden's 2026 breakout is going to happen simply because the stars aligned with the Chicago Bears

This was the general consensus on Burden from a lot of collegiate experts. Many of the draft gurus had Burden labeled as an exciting player, but thought he was just a one-trick pony, essentially. He could beat man coverage like nobody's business, but a lot of the times it was on shorter and quicker routes.

If you go and watch some of his Missouri highlights, it wasn't hard to see their point. He'd get the ball quickly and off he went. That was his thing. But, where a lot of those experts wanted to see growth was when it came to how he was going to beat NFL defenses that did a lot of disguising and, specifically, the zone types of packages.

In just one season, as a rookie, you saw Burden start to take off later in the year. And, that's what Harmon noticed, too.

"By the time you saw him get on the field, he really had some of those details in terms of being in the right place at the right time against zone coverage, down. Now, he is also a really good man (coverage) beater which is why I've always like Burden as a prospect."

Harmon also talked up fellow Bears wide receiver Rome Odunze and became very, very excited when speaking on the Bears' offense as a whole. But, when it came down to it, this was all about Burden. And, he couldn't stop gushing over the fact that Burden is essentially becoming the full package.

"That offense just rules. It's so well-designed and I think it's going to rip it up this year ... the fact that he is somebody that, with the ball in his hands, is special, and can also run routes and is learning those nuances as a zone beater, that is a pretty enticing package of players."

This is the type of analysis and hype that Bears fans can truly get behind. It is one thing to generally speak about Burden having a breakout year in his second season, but it's another to explain why it's going to happen.

In the grand scheme of things, it isn't difficult for an elite college athlete, at the wide receiver position, to win those one-on-one battles like Burden did at Mizzou. We see so many guys, every single season, who come out and operate as those fast, twitchy receivers and look like complete game-changers after the catch.

But, how many of those players actually make it in the league? Harmon's points are precisely why Burden did land in the right place. Had he gone to another team without a prolific offensive mind like Johnson, who knows if he'd be in position to know exactly how to beat zone coverage in the NFL.

Now, in just one season, Burden is trending toward becoming an elite playmaker who will scare opposing defensive coordinators to death because, well, they can't do anything about him. Short of just going old school and double-teaming Burden, defensive coordinators can't do anything to stop him.

If he can beat man coverage and zone coverage on a regular basis, then you're talking about a player who is truly unstoppable.
