One of the most fascinating position battles coming up at training camp for the Chicago Bears is what is going on at running back.
D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai have no questions about them being the top two backs on the depth chart. More of the questions come after that, as there will be a four-man battle for the RB3 job between Roschon Johnson, Salvon Ahmed, Brittain Brown, and Coleman Bennett.
Johnson will have the advantage given his experience with the Bears, and Brown will be competitive, having scored a touchdown in last year's regular season. Between Bennett and Ahmed, there is a clear choice for one of them to be a sleeper challenger to earn a 53-man roster spot.
Salvon Ahmed might surprise some people with making the Bears roster
Ahmed first made noise in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins in 2020, starting four of six games and impressing fans. He finished with 319 rushing yards, 61 receiving yards, and two touchdowns on the ground.
After that season, though, he was a bit quieter, playing in 32 games between 2021 and 2023, putting up 274 rushing yards, 213 receiving yards, and scoring three total touchdowns. Ahmed has not played in the regular season since 2023. He played for the Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts since then and was on the San Francisco 49ers in 2020 before his stint in Miami.
Chicago's backfield has a ton of talent, as each back brings their own skill set to the table. Ahmed can separate himself from the rest with his versatility and ability to impact both the passing and running game. Another big factor no one has talked about is Ahmed's familiarity with Bears head coach Ben Johnson and running backs coach Eric Studesville, as all three were together in Miami at one point.
It's going to take until the end of training camp for the Bears to decide who can win that third-string job, and potentially even add a fourth running back to the picture. Ahmed has shown good speed and the ability to make guys miss, which should put him ahead of the other running backs on the roster.

Bears fans will have to wait and see what happens with Ahmed and the rest of the running backs, but don't sleep on the idea that he could be on the roster in Week 1.
