As the Chicago Bears approach the start of the 2026 NFL Draft, there are a few positions with bigger needs than others.
Where does the safety depth chart currently stand, and what will the team need to improve the position this offseason?
Chicago Bears safety depth chart
Coby BryantÂ
The Bears went out and gave Bryant a substantial contract. This is notable because the Bears let both Kevin Byard and Jaquan Brisker leave in free agency. The two of them equaled one of Bryant, so the Bears are clearly seeing this as a pretty substantial upgrade. Still, adding one potential high-end starter has the depth, and the second starter is currently looking questionable.Â
Cam LewisÂ
Lewis has been a versatile piece during his six years with the Buffalo Bills. He has played a little slot and some safety as well. The Bears have some depth at cornerback and are far too thin at safety right now, so Lewis is listed as the potential number two.Â
Elijah Hicks
Hicks is a former seventh-round pick, so making it this long has been impressive. The Bears have mostly kept him because he is a quality special teams option, but he has shown he can make a spot start or come in for a few series when a starter gets hurt. He is a great depth piece to have, but does not bring much starter upside.Â
Gervarrious OwensÂ
Owens has been in the NFL since 2023 and has played for three different teams. He spent all of his last season on the Bears' practice squad, and the team brought him back. Still, that may be the upside of his potential.Â
Chicago Bears must draft at safetyÂ
This is one of the positions that the team cannot leave the draft without taking. Even if they do not add a starter-caliber player high, they are going to need some depth to compete with Hicks and push Owens down to the practice squad.Â

They could easily justify a high pick on safety as well, and put him ahead of Lewis from day one. Lewis may be best in the dime role, so this move may be more expected than not.Â
