The Chicago Bears have been busy in free agency, but they have not been retaining players as much as they have been using outside free agents to fill holes. The Bears' lack of interest in Nahshon Wright makes sense, but the rest of the league's lack of interest is a bit of a surprise.

Wright is viewed as one of the top cornerback free agents available. Chicago has not had great discussions with him on a contract because he believes he played well enough to cash in on a big deal, and the Bears understand that and do not have the means to pay it. However, that deal has not met Wright's standards, who remains unsigned.

Brad Biggs went on the Score after the first wave of free agency to discuss this. He brought up a few reasons why Wright has yet to cash in.

"“He’s a really different evaluation. It’s one season… he’s very scheme specific too… that doesn’t really surprise me.”"
Brad Biggs

Why has the Chicago Bears CB Nahshon Wright not signed in NFL Free agency?

This makes plenty of sense. Wright has bounced around the NFL for a while before finding his home in Chicago. This is by far his best season, and teams have to question if the one-year sample can outweigh four years of him being a journeyman before that.

Beyond that, he was not perfect with the Bears. Wright had a lot of game-changing plays, such as strips, fumble recoveries, and, of course, interceptions. However, he got so many chances because teams were going at him so much. There was risk and reward to his game.

He made big plays but also gave up some big ones. So, many teams are thinking that if Wright does not continue to bring the big plays, which is hard to sustain, the bad plays may continue, and the signing may not work out.

As Biggs mentioned, the scheme fit does not help him either. All of this is leading teams to question signing the talented cornerback.

A week or two ago, nobody would have thought that the Bears could re-sign Wright. The odds are still against Chicago, but every hour that he does not sign makes returning for another year in a good scheme fit more worthwhile.
