Of all the needs the Chicago Bears have on their roster, the one thing no one in the fan base thought about was tight end.
The Bears stunned everyone as they took Stanford tight end Sam Roush with the 69th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Last season with the Cardinal, Roush caught 49 receptions for 545 yards and two touchdowns.
Chicago currently has Colston Loveland and Cole Kmet as the top two tight ends on the roster. One of them might not be as happy with the fact that Roush is joining the team.
Cole Kmet might kiss his roster spot goodbye with Sam Roush on the Bears
Kmet had a down season due to Bears head coach Ben Johnson struggling to get the tight ends going at the beginning of the season, but also Loveland's emergence made it tougher to get targets. The veteran tight end had one of the worst seasons of his NFL career.
The interesting part of all this is that Kmet just restructured his contract with the Bears to create some cap space. Even with a hit it could have with the dead cap, the Bears may not completely count out the idea of trading him away before or after June 1.
Even if the Bears don't trade him, there's a chance that Roush could end up taking that number two tight end spot from Kmet and play more. Johnson seems to be leaning more towards the younger players on the roster and having them grow within the roster.

The Bears will have some interesting decisions at tight end, but it is very clear that the position is deeper than it ever has been for the franchise for a long time.
